Cefixime Trihydrate Cefixime is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections like urinary tract infections, ear infections and lung infections caused by bacteria. This medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Cefixime is highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes. As a result, many organisms resistant to penicillins and some cephalosporins due to the presence of beta-lactamases, may be susceptible to cefixime. The antibacterial effect of cefixime results from inhibition of mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu).
